Communication equipment is most important when you are caught up in an emergency. If you are going boating with a group, make sure at least one other person knows how to use emergency and communication equipment.

Using Radios or Cell Phones

The first thing you should do when you feel that your boat is in danger is to call for help using a VHF radio or Cell phone.

A VHF marine radio is specifically intended for communication with other ships or marine installations. This can be a powerful tool in times of emergency. This should be at the top of your list of things to have on board your ship.

A cell phone is also a valuable tool in an emergency. It will put you through to a land operator but you will not be able to communicate directly with rescue teams such as lifeboats and helicopters as you would with a VHF radio.

Once you have made contact with someone, tell them as clearly as possible the name of your vessel, your position, how many people are on board and what assistance you require.

Using Flares

Flares should be used in an emergency whether or not you have contacted someone by phone or by VHF radio. This is because a visual signal will help rescue teams locate you more quickly. You should be familiar with the instructions before having to use the flares. Don't wait until there is an emergency to read the instructions. Time may be crucial in a boating emergency.

Hand Held or Pin Point Flares - Hold the flare at arm's length. Do not look at it once it is lit. This flare can be seen 5 miles away during the day and 7 miles away at night.

Parachute Rockets - The flare rises 300m and falls slowly in a parachute. This type of flare can be seen from approximately 25 miles.

Orange Smoke - Always ignite the smoke down wind. The smoke can be seen from about 3 miles in daylight.

Avoid firing flare guns toward other vessels or land structures where the falling flare might cause a fire. You should also be aware that flare guns and such devices are similar to firearms in many respects and should always be handled with extreme caution. Some states have already prohibited the use of certain types of flares.

Victor Epand is an expert consultant about model boats, boat parts, and model submarines. At the most basic level, this happens its own accord: as the piston falls during the induction stroke, air rushes in past the open inlet valve to fill the expanding space. Then, when the compression and power strokes are complete, the exhaust valve opens and the rising piston pushes the exhaust gas out ready for a fresh charge of clean air.

In practice, though, the engine needs an air filter to stop dirt, moisture and bits of rubbish being sucked into its cylinders, and needs an exhaust system to dispose of the hot exhaust gases safely and quietly. To save having a separate filter and exhaust pipe for each cylinder of a multi-cylinder engine the incoming air is fed to the cylinders through tubular structures called inlet manifolds, and the exhaust gases are carried away through similar structures called the exhaust manifolds.

Air filters

Unlike their cousins that power tractors and earth-moving machinery, marine diesels usually operate in a relatively clean environment: there's little danger of them having to contend with straw, dust or roadside litter. This means that their air filters can be relatively simple, so some engines operate perfectly well for years with little more than a metal box with a few baffles in it.

Most, however, have something a little more sophisticated, involving either wire gauze or porous paper.

Paper tends to restrict the air flow, so to make up for this its area has to be increased by being folded into a concertina shape. It's also difficult to clean, so once a paper filter becomes clogged it has to be replaced with a new one.

Wire gauze doesn't restrict the air flow as much, but it is less effective because the gaps between the strands of wire are bigger than those between the fibres of paper. To counter this problem - and to minimise corrosion - wire gauze filters need to be dipped in oil from time to time, so that dust sticks to them instead of passing straight through.

Exhaust systems

When it comes to exhaust systems, the boot is on the other foot: road vehicles and agricultural machinery have an easy time of it. Their engines are in compartments that are open to the atmosphere but sealed away from their drivers and passengers, so all that's required is a pipe connected to the exhaust manifold, with a few baffles to reduce the noise. A few marine installations adopt a similar 'dry' exhaust system, usually in the form of an exhaust pipe sticking straight up from the engine compartment, with a weighted flap to stop rain or spray running down inside and heat resistant lagging to minimise the risk of fire or burns.

For pleasure craft, though, wet exhaust systems are pretty well standard, with water from the engine's cooling system used to cool the exhaust gas. The water is mixed with the exhaust gas in the injection bend, where it almost immediately turns into steam but in doing so reduces the temperature of the exhaust gases from almost 500° C to about 70° C - cool enough to allow flexible tubing and GRP to be used for the rest of the exhaust system.

At that reduced temperature, the steam condenses back into water. That is why the mixing takes place in a bend: it protects the engine against the possibility of the cooling water running back through the system and into the cylinders.

If the engine is below the waterline, or very close to it, however, the injection bend alone is not enough: there's a danger that water already in the exhaust might set up a siphon effect that would allow sea water from outside to make its way back through the exhaust system and into the engine. To stop this, many boats have an extra loop in the exhaust system, known as a swan-neck. To guard against the possibility of waves pushing water up the exhaust pipe, some boats have a one-way flap covering the end of the pipe where it emerges from the hull; on some sailing yachts you may even find a hand-operated gate valve that seals the exhaust pipe completely when the engine is not being used.

The vital thing about any exhaust system that it must not restrict the flow of exhaust gases beyond a certain limit, because if exhaust can't get out of the cylinders, there will be no room for fresh air to get in. The effect is exactly the same as if the air filter were clogged: starved of oxygen, the engine will not be able to burn its fuel, so it will lose power and produce black smoke.

More power

Any engine is simply a device for converting the energy released from burning fuel into mechanical power. None of them are very good at it: well over 60 per cent of energy released from the fuel is expended as heat and vibration, rather than as use mechanical work. Engine designers are continually working to improve efficiency but the fact remains that the power an engine can produce will always be limited by the rate at which it can burn fuel.

Important Safety Tips For Row Boats

Even though row boats are not intended for lengthily or extended trips as some other boats are, they can still run into the same dangers as other of boats that may be larger and faster. But if you take certain precautions and follow some basic rules, you can ensure the safety of yourself and passengers each time you go out on the water in your row boat.

SAFETY CHECKLIST

Once you have secured your boat and you are sure that it is in proper working condition, take time to go through this basic safety checklist.

Have enough life jackets for all boaters. Each boater should have their own personal wearable flotation device (PFD).

You should always carry an emergency repair kit which includes quick repair items such as duct tape, extra rope, repair shields or glue and other items you feel may be important.

Make sure you have working lights. All non-motorized boats have to carry a lantern or flashlight. Other boats should be able to see your light from a distance of two miles or more.

Check ropes to be certain that they are in a safe operating condition. Each boat should have a bow and stern line attached to it. Check each line for damage or wear.

Observe the overall condition of the exterior and interior of the boat. Check the floor of the boat very carefully to see that there are no rips or wear to seams or jointed areas.

Check the weather before you leave. Be aware of expected precipitation, water and air temperature as well as wind speed.

It is very important to carry emergency sound devices, such as a horn, whistle or sounding flares to alert others of your situation. If you have a cell phone make sure the battery is charged.

WHILE YOU ARE ON THE WATER

A row boat experience can be fun for the whole family as long as you always keep safety in mind first. No matter how long you have been boating, there are some basic safety rules to remember while you are out on the water in a row boat. These rules may seem obvious, but each person on board should be reminded to follow them.

Never stand up in the boat. The shift in weight may cause the boat to overturn.

Do not sit on the side of the boat, always sit on the floor of the boat or on a seat.

Don't get exhausted while rowing. It is best to have at least two people on board who are able to do the rowing.

Victor Epand is an expert consultant about model boats, boat parts, and model submarines. You will find the best shopping at these sites for model boats, used row boat parts.

Marine Solenoids

Solenoids are electrically operated switches consisting of a coil of wire around a metal plunger. When electricity flows through the coil it becomes a magnet, and pulls the metal plunger into itself. This pulling action has all sorts of purposes on an engine: it can. for instance, be used to shut off the fuel supply, allowing the engine to be stopped from the dashboard, or to operate the heavy duty switch that allows current to flow between the battery and starter motor.

On most small petrol engines, that is all the starter solenoids do, just allow current to flow to the motor. The physical connection between the motor and the engine is achieved by an arrangement known as a bendix, made up of a cog (called a pinion) that can slide along a spiral groove machined into the motor's shaft. While the motor is stopped, a spring holds the pinion down towards the starter body by a spring. As the starter starts to turn, the pinion takes time to catch up so for a fraction of a second it is turning more slowly than the shaft on which it is mounted. As a result, the spiral groove in the shaft screws its way through the pinion, forcing it away from the starter body to engage with a circle of matching teeth (called the ring gear) on the engine's flywheel. As soon as the engine starts, the ring gear drives the pinion faster than the motor is turning, so the opposite happens: the pinion screws its way back down the starter shaft to disengage itself from the ring gear.

Diesel engines generally have a more rugged set-up called a pre-engaged starter. Here, solenoids do two jobs. The first part of their travel is used to push the starter pinion into engagement with the ring gear: only when the pinion is engaged can the plunger complete its movement to allow current to flow to the motor.

Where to buy? boatpartsdatabase.com has lots of resources for the boating trade and public alike. The web is a vast source of information. Boatpartsdatabase collects the leisure marine industry into one huge database of contacts. R.I.B.S. Marine engine parts is just one example.

Buying Your First Sailboat

Sailing is great. You become part of the environment around you as you capture the winds energy and move ahead.

There are all types of sailboats. Generally speaking, there are cruisers, racers, cruiser-racers, center cockpits and pilothouses.

If you are a first timer, there is no better time to jump into one. Prices are down and deals are for the making! You have to look at the different types available (going to a boat show is the best place to start) and find what makes you feel comfortable. How it looks, how the cockpit feels and the cabin below will influence your decision. The cruiser type sailboat ranging between 25- 30 feet is a common first sailboat, because they are easier to handle for the inexperienced sailor.

When you are more experienced, your choice becomes refined. You start where you feel comfortable, just as you would with a car, and, after a while, you may like cruising and go for a larger sailboat with more speed and comfort. Or you may turn to racing - a great sport the whole family can enjoy. You learn quite a bit about sail handling and usually join the club. They may have cookouts and activities lined up the year through. There are racing machine sailboats out there in all sizes, but with sparse interiors, less weight and more speed. But a new breed of sailboats has been coming out, getting better year after year. It is the racer-cruiser, capturing the best of both worlds.

Center cockpit sailboats present the deck forward and aft with the steering towards the center of the sailboat. This configuration allows you and your guests to relax in the stern area of your sailboat rather than everyone being in the cockpit. The stern railing usually has built in seating and some also have deck mats to layout and get a tan.

Below there is your cabin made up of your salon (living room), forward stateroom (bedroom), with a head (bathroom), and to the rear of the salon there is another stateroom with an ensuite head. This area is usually large and enticing, depending how large the sailboat is. But, best of all, I find it great after a long cruise to just go back there, close the door and relax in peace.

The pilothouse is a nice change. This type of sailboat features an aft cockpit with steering and, if the weather gets bad or if it is raining, you can duck in to the cabin ahead, which is usually raised and also contains a cockpit. That becomes your salon with another cabin area further ahead and below. Sleeping accommodations are in the salon like all sailboats and also up forward. Maintenance becomes that much easier, its possible to wash down the boat after use - this is a great plus point in a saltwater or brackish environment. Once washed downed the boat is all set for the next outing.

Boat hoists are available in a choice of different models -

Manual - these vertical lifting hoists feature a large wheel that is hand-cranked to turn and raise the lift. It's possible to up-grade these lifts to include a direct drive unit, so replacing the wheel with a push-button operation.

Hydraulic - these vertical or cantilever lifting hoists are quiet and quick to operate and offer the most advanced technology. Lift a boat in seconds instead of minutes. Helm control is also possible with the addition of a remote control unit.

Hoists often function as a electric, manual or a solar rechargeable unit. Each of these models have there own plus and minus points. The A/C or D/C power units offer ease in lifting and lowering the boat. The manual is a simple, reliable and low cost option, although not ideal if you come back tired from a days boating. And the solar model can be effective, but has been known to cut out halfway up as the battery starts to drain.

On a public dock it can help to have the electrics for the hoist mounted in a control box that's waterproof and lockable. This can prevent that mischievous someone from lowering the boat when least expecting it.

If at all possible, opt for the largest capacity boat hoist that can be installed and structurally supported. This can elevate the need to update the lift at a later date should a new boat be purchased. Just because you have a 4000lb boat at the moment doesn't mean you'll always keep that craft.

If you're interested in getting a more detailed look at the Boat Lifts, including a variety of boating tips and ideas, take a look at http://www.RecreationalWatercraft.com

Purchasing Your First New Boat

If you are buying a new boat you should be aware that there are some basic things that you need to have for your new boat. The first thing you should do is to purchase the "Coast Guard Safety Package" that your dealer may offer you when you buy the boat. This package will usually include life jackets (PFDs), whistles and chemical lights for your (PFDs), flares, fire extinguisher, and a first aid kit with a manual.

You will also need an anchor and chain that has plenty of line. The size and length of the line depends on the size of the boat and how you will use your boat. Three or four twenty five foot lines will be enough to start. You should also have a tool box with basic tools and a good quality bilge pump and a back up bilge pump.

When it comes to certain things such as electrical equipment, it is recommended that you purchase these things from your dealer and let your dealer install them. Many people purchase these items from a catalog and they try to install on their own. Sometimes the installation that you do at home in the driveway can cause more problems for your boat if not done correctly.

No matter what kind of boating you are planning to do, every boat owner must carry some other basic safety equipment. A VHF radio is one of the most important pieces of equipment that any boater should carry. If you have more than one it will be helpful in times of emergency.

One of the best things that you could do for yourself and everyone else that will be on your boat, is to take a boating safety course with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary or the US Power Squadron. This course is a good idea for all family members who will be out on the water. Many boating accidents and fatalities could be avoided if you have some basic knowledge about boating. It is definitely worth the time to take one of these courses.

Another good idea to protect yourself and others on your boat is to have a membership with a towing association, such as Boat US, Vessel Assist Association of America, or Sea-Tow. If you run your boat aground in a major metropolitan area, the average cost to rescue you is about $200.00-$300.00. There are also many fringe benefits to membership such as radio checks, float plans, and several other things that will help you to stay safe and feel secure on the water.

Victor Epand is an expert consultant about model boats, boat parts, and model submarines. You will find the best shopping at these sites for model boats, used boat parts to fix your boat.

Marine Gearboxes

The overwhelming majority of engine-driven craft use propellers to convert the power of the engine to useful work. There are plenty of alternatives which may have advantages for specific applications, but propeller systems are good all-rounders that are reasonably cheap, simple, reliable, efficient and easy to use.

They suffer, however, from one potentially significant drawback, which is that a large slow turning propeller is generally more efficient than a small fast-spinning one. Even on small pleasure craft, where the maximum size of propeller is often limited by hull shape, the optimum shaft speed is usually in the order of 1000 rpm - only a half or a quarter of the speed of the engine. Running the engine more slowly isn't the answer, because you'd just lose most of the power you've paid for by buying it in the first place. What you need is something that will reduce the shaft speed but increase its torque (turning effort).

It's also very useful to be able to reverse the direction of rotation, to provide astern power to stop the boat or make it go backwards, or to fit counter-rotating propellers on a twin-screw boat. Again, there are alternatives such as variable-pitch propellers whose blades swivel on the hub, scoop-like deflectors, or even boat engines that can be stopped and restarted in the opposite direction, but by far the most popular arrangement is a reversing gearbox.

Reversing gearboxes

Two gearwheels, whose teeth mesh together so that as one turns, the other has to turn as well. The smaller gear has 9 teeth, so if it is turning at 1000 rpm, its teeth are moving at 9000 teeth per minute. The larger wheel is twice the size, and has 18 teeth, so although its teeth must also be moving at 9000 teeth per minute, that means only 500 rpm. Note, too, that if the smaller wheel is turning clockwise, the larger wheel must be turning anticlockwise.

Now imagine that you're using a spanner a foot long to turn the smaller wheel. If you apply an effort of 10 lb to the end of the spanner, you're applying a torque of 10 lb/ft (10 lb at a radius of 1 ft). The gear-wheel is much smaller - let's say it has an effective radius of 1 in. That means its teeth must be pushing on the teeth of the other wheel with a force equivalent to 120 lb (120 lb at a radius of 1/12 ft = 120 x 1/12 = 10 lb/ft). The larger wheel has an effective radius of 2 in, so a force of 1201b to its teeth corresponds to a torque of 20 lb/ft (120 x 2/12 = 20 lb/ft).

In other words, by using a 9-tooth wheel to drive an 18-tooth wheel, we've halved the speed doubled the torque, and reversed the direction of rotation.

Simple gearboxes

Real boat gearboxes look more complicated, but depend on exactly this principle. In fact, the main difference between the simple gear train and the Volvo MS2 is that the MS2 uses coneshaped bevel gears, so that although the input shaft is horizontal, the central driven shaft is vertical.

The motive for this is that it provides a simple way of achieving a choice of ahead or astern gear.

The bevel gear on the input shaft turns two slightly larger bevel gears that spin freely on the vertical shaft. One is driven by the top of the input gear and the other by the bottom of it, so they rotate in opposite directions, but they are the same size as each other so they turn at the same speed.

Between the two gears is a sliding clutch assembly, shaped like two shallow cones mounted base-to-base on the shaft. Ridges called splines on the shaft and matching grooves in the clutch ensure that it can easily slide up and down, but can't turn without turning the shaft as well. Moving the gear lever slides the clutch up or down so that one of the cones engages into a matching hollow in one of the spinning gears, which locks that gear on to the shaft.

At the bottom of the shaft, a relatively small bevel gear engages with a much larger gear on the output shaft, to give a horizontal output, at a much lower speed of rotation.

Layshaft gearboxes

Although the MS2 and its derivatives are common on Volvo engines up to about 200 hp, it's somewhat unusual in using a vertical shaft. A more widespread arrangement is the layshaft gearbox.

In this case, a small gear on the input shaft turns a larger gear on the layshaft. Like the gears on the vertical shaft of the MS2, this is free to spin around the layshaft, but can be locked on to it by a clutch. If the input shaft is turning clockwise and the clutch is engaged, the layshaft turns anticlockwise and more slowly. At the other end of the layshaft a smaller gear meshes with a large gear on the output shaft, driving the output shaft clockwise and even more slowly.

Astern gear is achieved by a second layshaft. Its very similar to the first, with two gearwheels, one of which has a clutch that can leave it free-spinning or lock it on to the shaft, while the other is constantly in mesh with the output shaft. The key feature about the second layshaft is that it is not driven directly by the input shaft, but

by the first layshaft. This means that it's turning in the opposite direction - so if one clutch is released and the other engaged, the direction of the output shaft will be reversed.

Epicyclic gearboxes

The third alternative, renowned for its smooth operation but now becoming less popular - is known as the epicyclic gearbox.

The central gearwheel - known as the sun gear - is mounted on the input shaft, driven by the engine. Around it are several smaller planet gears mounted in a rigid cage called the planet holder. while the whole assembly is surrounded by a cylindrical ring gear that looks rather like the hub of a trailer wheel but with teeth machined into its inner surface. The output shaft is coupled directly to the planet holder.

For ahead operation. a clutch is used to lock the planet gears so that they can't turn. In effect, this means that the input shaft, ring gear, planet holder and output shaft are all locked together so the whole assembly turns as though it were one piece.

For astern gear, the ring gear is locked to the casing, and the planet gears are left free to rotate. If the input shaft turns clockwise, this means that the inner planets have to turn anticlockwise, driving the outer planets clockwise. In order to do this, they have to run anticlockwise around the inside of the ring gear, taking the planet holder - and, of course, the output shaft - around with them.

One major snag with this is that although it provides an ahead/astern facility, it can't offer the reduction in shaft speed that is one of the main reasons for wanting a gearbox in the first place. To do that requires a second gearbox in tandem with the first - adding to the cost, weight, bulk and complexity of the whole unit. The second gearbox is usually another epicyclic unit, but with the important difference that there are no clutches involved, and the output shaft is connected to the ring gear instead of to the planet holder.

In this case, the spinning input shaft coming from the reversing gearbox drives the sun wheel, which makes the planet wheels turn, and they, in turn, drive the ring gear.

Marine Clutches

An important characteristic of all marine gearboxes is that the gears of both drive trains - ahead and astern - are in mesh all the time, and that selection of ahead, astern and neutral is achieved by using clutches to disconnect whichever drive train is not in use.

There are two main types of clutches: the cone clutch used in the MS2, and the plate clutch used in most of the others.

The plate clutch consists of a stack of flat friction plates. Some of the plates have internal splines which mesh with matching splines on the shaft, so they have to turn with it. Sandwiched between them are similar plates which are free to spin around the input shaft but have external splines that mesh with splines on the inner surface of the clutch casing - connected to the output shaft. So long as the stack is loose, the two shafts are free to rotate independently of each other. Compressing the stack forces the plates into contact with each other so that they grip and force the two shafts to turn together.

For relatively small engines - up to about 100 hp - a hand-operated lever may be enough to operate either sort of clutch, but bigger engines need more pressure to be applied. This calls for hydraulics, in which a pump built into the gearbox creates hydraulic pressure to force the plates together. All the gear lever has to do is operate a valve, diverting the hydraulic pressure to whichever clutch requires it.

Who can help with your boat gearbox? boatpartsdatabase.com has lots of resources for the boating trade and public alike.

The web is a vast source of information. This is particularly important in the case of outboard and outdrive propellers, which usually have either shear pins or flexible hubs that are designed to protect the engine and transmission by slipping or breaking if the propeller hits something. Unfortunately, after a period of time, these protective devices break of their own accord, so it's important to make sure that the propeller can be taken off and replaced at sea.

Removing yacht propellers

Straighten out the legs of the split pin and remove it, or flatten the lugs of the tab washer that holds the propeller nut in place.

Use a block of wood to stop the propeller turning and undo the propeller nut.

It should be possible to pull an outboard or sterndrive's propeller off the shaft by hand. Make note of the order that any springs or washers come off, and which way round they go.

The best way to remove a stubborn propeller is with a puller. Once the puller has been tightened, a few light taps with a hammer on the puller should make the propeller slide off.
As a last resort, try warming the propeller boss with a blow lamp.

Propeller repair

If necessary, use a file to smooth any burrs or nicks from the edges of the propeller, but be careful not to remove so much metal that there is a risk of the propeller becoming unbalanced. If it is badly damaged refer it to a propeller repair workshop.

Replacing propellers

Before replacing the propeller, grease the shaft with a non-graphite grease.
Slide the propeller back on, making sure that any keys, shear pins, springs or washers are replaced exactly as they were removed, but use a new tab washer (if there was one) to hold the propeller nut in place.

Tighten the propeller nut just sufficiently to grip the propeller, then insert the split pin (if there was one). Bend up one tab of the tab washer to hold the nut in place, or open the legs of the split pin and bend them round the nut.

Stern glands

Greasing stern glands
If your stern gland is fitted with a greaser, routine greasing involves either turning the handle or tightening the cap by one turn after every few hours' running: once every four hours is about right. Eventually, this will use up all the grease, which will have to be replaced. Don't use graphite grease: its carbon content causes extremely rapid corrosion in the presence of salt water.
Remove the top cap of the greaser. If yours is the type that uses a handle like that of a garden tap to operate a plunger, 'unscrew' the handle to return the plunger to its starting position.

Invert the grease can, so that the hole in the plastic disc is over the greaser.

Press the whole can downwards, so that the plastic disc slides into the can and forces grease out. You may have to stop a few times, especially when the greaser is nearly full, to allow trapped air to escape.

Replace the cap of the greaser.

Adjusting stern glands

With the engine stopped and out of gear, turn the shaft by hand to get a feel for how stiff it is.
Slacken off any lock-nuts holding the two parts of the stern gland together.

Tighten the clamping bolts that hold the two parts of the stern gland together, or screw the sleeve into the outer casing. Don't tighten them by more than half a turn at a time, and - if yours is the type that has two or three bolts - make sure that you tighten them evenly.

Turn the shaft by hand and check for drips: it should turn freely and leak between one and six drips per minute. If it is leaking too quickly, repeat.

Outdrives and saildrives

Outdrives and saildrives circumvent the need for a stern gland altogether by - in effect - extending the gearbox right into the water in the form of a drive leg. Of course, this doesn't make the problem go away altogether: it just changes it a bit, because instead of having to seal the gap around a small rotating shaft, there's a much bigger hole to plug between the hull and the drive leg. Outdrives achieve this by using flexible rubber bellows between the transom and the leg, while saildrives use a rubber diaphragm to seal the joint between the drive unit and the bottom of the boat. Servicing recommendations vary depending on the manufacturer and model, but the importance of following them to the letter is obvious.

Repair your propellers? boatpartsdatabase.com has lots of resources for the boating trade and public alike.

The web is a vast source of information. These foldable boats are available in a variety of sizes with 8 to 14 feet being the most common sizes, and some able to fold down to as little as 4 inches in thickness.

The folderable boats come in a variety of innovative designs. Those that are constructed of one central piece that's hinged together in a polypropylene material and folds flat (surfboard size) after use. To those that are again made from the flexible polypropylene material but can be bent and folded into a compact storage bag or those that are build out of an aluminum frame that has several pieces with the hull coated in a tough and durable boatskin.

Often compared to the inflatable boats in relation to its size and store-ability, although each have their own plus and minus points. The inflatable's need the time and effort to inflate and deflate it, while the foldables need time to assemble and to be broken down again after use. An inflatable can puncture if it snags on a sharp rock. On the other hand the polypropylene material is a tough and impact resistant material, so no branch or rock will damage these boats.

If not keen on the flimsiness of an inflatable than opt for the hard and stiff construction of a folderable. The small size of these boats is a positive point for the traveler as some are packed into a bag as small as a backpack-style bag.

These folderable water-crafts are ideal for those wishing to get into boating but don't have adequate space to store or transport a full-sized craft. And that's one of the most important points to these folding boats that can be easily broken-down after use and stored away in a garage, apartment closet, or the boot of a vehicle - awaiting that next fishing trip.

If you're interested in getting a more detailed look at Folding Boats, including a variety of boating tips and ideas, take a look at http://www.RecreationalWatercraft.com.

What Better Way You Can Think of Safeguarding Your Boat on Water?

For those who love to experience the wild spirit of water sports, fishing right in the middle of water or simply going on for boating excursions, are all a sheer sense of adventure to spend hours on boat. But, there are certain points where you need to be cautious while boating. When on water or outside it, you're exposed to millions of dangers that you may not even be aware of. In order to safeguard from these dangers you need to have highly efficient boat covers.

If you do not want to spoil your sport while on boating excursion or in the middle of some water sport then ensure the safety and maintenance of your boat beforehand. Thus, comes in the role of these covers. Before investing your money on covers you need to have thorough knowledge of boat covers, their fabric and types of covers so that you may not purchase an ill-fitting cover that proves to be of little use to you. There is stiff competition amongst boat covers dealers during peak holiday season and this may lead you into cheap bargains so be equipped with right information prior.

Select the right boat cover

There are wide array of covers available as per the style and type of boat you own and some of the popular ones include pontoon cover Bayliner boat cover Sunbrella boat cover and custom boat covers. Every boat has its specific requirements. As it promises you immense leisure and good time, so it's your responsibility to maintain it properly and keep it in good working condition throughout the year. Rodents, wind, waves, dust, UV rays and some water bodies may harm your boat terribly. In order to keep all these harmful elements at bay from posing any threat, you must install a right kind of cover on your boat.

Custom boat covers for a perfect fit

Definitely brand name works a lot like that of Sunbrella or Bayliner. But another option available to provide ultimate protection to your dearest possession is the custom covers. These are designed specifically in accordance with the size and style of your boat and are tailor-made to meet your personal needs. You can get the alteration and modifications done right at the time of designing.

Readymade boat covers may not necessarily have the same fitting as desired by you. For instance, they may not be made as per your boat's design and once you have made the purchase you are not left with any other alternative but to use that ill-fitting cover somehow. However, in case of custom covers you are spared from such hurdles and hassles. You can choose the fiber, color and design as per your requirement which makes custom boat covers favorite amongst people who love spending long time on water.

Nonetheless, the quality and assurance provided by boat covers from big manufacturers can also not be superseded, if it fits your boat well. So, it all depends on you if you think customized boat covers are best for your boat or the branded ones.

If you are on look out for some more buying tips on boat covers then check out http://www.boatcoversadvice.com

Simple Do-It-Yourself Gel Coat Repairs

Got a scrape, crack, or soft deck on your power boat or sailboat? Here's a quick, easy fix that will save you money. There are many different ways to go about the repair, but my method works and is not too difficult to master.

Let's get started fixing that crack.

Did your jib pole come loose? Did the anchor swing too wildly or did your landlubber friend forget to tell you he had on his golf shoes? Don't laugh...it happens. I used to get all upset when I saw the slightest damage to my gel coat and thought it would never be the same. You will always see it even after a mint fix. But no one else will, even if the fix is not perfect. Power boats get cracks here and there from the pounding as they cut through waves. Sailboats get it the same way, plus all the heeling over they do.

I have read all the books and articles and found they all do a great repair. Some more complicated than others. I took the best from each and now do this procedure for a great fix.

What you'll need:

1. Get a Bondo can (auto/marine body filler), that is short and wide, with a plastic top. This comes with the catalyst you will need.
2. Sandpaper/wet & dry (emery cloth), 1 sheet of each: #220, #320, #400, #600
3. Gel Coat color from the manufacturer - it's worth the wait to get it. If not, you can use white gel coat with the tints you need to get it right. Most stores have a chart.
You can mix the gel coat over the winter. Get the right color card from Home Depot, and you can play with the color over the winter, until you get a match, and save it in a jar for the spring.
4. Acetone
5. Masking Tape
6. Spray bottle, sold in marine supply or hardware stores.
7. Screwdriver or metal pick
8. Newspaper

As you can see from the materials list, there need not be a great expense in performing your own repair. These materials can last through 10 repairs. Each time you take care of the crack yourself, you can save yourself hundreds of dollars.

1. In order to repair a crack, clear the area. Take a good look at it and then take some acetone on a rag and clean in and around the crack. A little goes a long way. Too much is no good. This cleans the wax, dirt, and stains off so you now can see clearly how far the crack really goes and what color you should mix, too. The factory gel coat that was sent is the original color of the boat's gel coat. By sanding lightly with 300 grit wet you will bring this color out, but it will not match the rest of the boat. You may have to add a touch of yellow or gray/black to get that faded color. Look from the sun. If you plan to compound to the original color, then go with the factory color, otherwise, tint it down.

2. Now that the gel coat is ready, let's get back to the crack. After using some acetone and sanding right around and in the crack, use a flat hand screwdriver or metal pick to loosen any material in the crack. Make good, fat edges at either side of the crack. Chip away at it until you get to good, un-cracked gel coat. Sand the area, blow out and acetone again.

3. Tape around the area you are working on, close to the crack. Then tape newspaper around it to catch any over-spray.

4. If the crack is deep, you need to add some plastic filler (bondo). You can use the type that has fiberglass strands. A white colored filler is preferable. Mix the proper amount of catalyst into the filler and squeeze it into the crack. If the crack is small, use a flathead screwdriver. Keep it just in the crack. Use masking tape along the edges, if you need. You can keep it level with the surrounding gel coat, because when it dries, you will sand it lightly with the 220 or 300 grit and make a slight depression in the plastic. Drying time will vary according to the temperature and amount of catalyst used. Pull the excess masking tape away. Use acetone to wash away the masking tape glue and any impurities.

5. Get the sprayer, read the instructions. Pour the gel coat (factory or mixed) into the jar. Add some acetone to cut the thickness of the gel coat so it can spray out. Add the proper amount of catalyst, stir and screw the jar back on and you're ready to go.

6. Find a piece of cardboard to spray on. Feel the force and the amount that comes out of the sprayer. Press the nozzle to move it to the right. Release nozzle. Press the nozzle again, move to the left and so on to get a smooth coat. Now, spray the repair area with the same motion. See how it looks before you repeat the process. Don't try to complete it in one or two shots. Slow and easy. It will cover. You can put extra coats on because you will do sanding next. Don't put too much on. Let it dry. It's good to do this in 70 - 80 degree weather. If it is cooler out, point a utility light at it. It should harden it in anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, varying according to the outside temperature. If you want, you can leave it overnight. If it still doesn't set, use the acetone to get it off and try again with a better combo of catalyst. You will get good at this one you do it several times, just like riding a bike.

7. After the gel coat hardens, take that plastic cup top and put some water in it. Rip a 1" x 4" piece of emery cloth off the 220 or 300 grit. Soak it a bit and also put some water over the repair. Wipe it around. Now, with the emery cloth pliable, lightly sand over the repair. Feel the coarseness of the area you are sanding. Add more water if it feels pretty flush with the surrounding area. Move to 400 grit, then to 600 grit. Get it nice and wet. Watch not to take too much gel coat off. Do a little checking as you're sanding.

8. The final step is using a little white compound. Add a touch of water. Compound out lightly. Wash off thoroughly and wax. You're done. Is it perfect? Maybe, but if not, no will see it unless you put blue gel coat where white should belong. In the meantime, you will forget about where it actually is as it fades in. A scrape is basically the same, just a large area. Sometimes a light sanding with 300 or 400 grit, nice and wet, will remove most and sometimes, surprisingly, all of the scrape without a gel coat repair. It just depends how deep it is.

With a little practice, you can save yourself a boat-load of money otherwise spent on having the gel coat refinished professionally. If doing it yourself is not your thing, you may find understanding the process helpful when consulting with a repair center.

Douglas Malat is a licensed captain, freelance writer and co-author of http://www.YachtAuthority.com, where you will find gel coat repair services in your area.

Marine Carpet - In Need of a Replacement Boat Carpet

The type of marine grade carpet chosen often depends on the type of boat and its intended use. A bass or fishing boat for example will be in need of a tough and resilient carpet, that offers UV resistant fibers, and is able to hold up to the effects of stains, mildew or mold after long periods in damp conditions. Its crucial that the marine carpet is made of a thick, heavy, and durable material that's able to withstand the challenges of the marine environment.

These boat carpets are easy to install with its flexible rubbing backing and a material that's easy to cut to shape. Installation can often be achieved with the ideal tools and a little direction. Just remember to use one of the specific water-resistant adhesives to glue down the boat carpet to give that firm hold. Although, for someone that's not too keen on do-it-yourself projects, its still possible to save $ by buying the carpet from one of the online marine supply stores and having an installer fix it in place.

To ensure that a low-quality boat carpet isn't purchased look towards a carpet that the major manufacturers use as standard on their production boats. There are a variety of companies that offer such boating wear, so it shouldn't be a problem to locate a carpet that's able to resist effects of the salt air, humidity and moisture out at sea.

The rubber backed marine carpets are also ideal in places that require a durable or weather proof footing, such as workshops, garages, docks, patios or a basement. The marine-grade quality carpets are going to offers years of service and that's much longer than a lot of the standard outdoor carpets could do. And in most cases maintenance is a case of a wash down with warm water and a household detergent.

Whether its a bass boat, motor-driven yacht, pontoon boat or a simple runabout there are a vast choice of marine carpet that's up to the abuse of the sun, salt spray and dampness out on the water. Most yacht owners were happy to leave the interiors of their craft the same way they were when they purchased them. But a large movement towards interior design has yacht owners thinking about the new trends for nautical design, and what the trends were in 2008, and what they'll be in 2009.

In the past, most design was based on decadence. The more elaborate (and expensive), the better. This is because the boats themselves were elaborate affairs, with all of the bells and whistles. In the last year, a movement towards more streamlined luxury watercraft has been unveiled, and as such, owners are beginning to adopt a more minimalist approach to interior design.

Most modern design is now based on neutral colors like beige and white to make the interior of the yacht appear larger. Also, a trend is seen using Asian design elements. It seems that new designs follow closely to what trends are happening on land, and as such, the plain and contemporary look now rules the seas as well.

Famous names of the design industry like Armani and Philipp Starck are now designing luxury watercraft interiors as part of their vast empires. The industry will continue to play a large part in boat ownership. Though living on the seas won't take the place of your typical land home, decorating your yacht to your tastes and preferences can make it feel more like a home away from home than ever.

Dalton Designs, Inc (http://www.daltondesignsinc.com/) is a yacht interior design firm. Choosing the right furniture for your boat will add comfort and enhance its appearance. It will also give you a chance to express your personal style on the water just as you would in your own house on land.

The first thing you have to do is to decide what type of atmosphere you want your boat to have. Depending on the size of the boat and they style you want to convey, your boat can be anything from elegant to casual. You may want to consider how much entertaining you will be doing on your boat. This may help you decide how casual or how elegant you want your boat to be. Most people who like to entertain on their boat will want at least a touch of elegance.

Draw a floor plan

One sure way to go wrong when buying furniture for your boat is to overestimate the space that is available. Make sure that you choose smaller pieces that will fit well in your boat. Avoid large, clumsy furniture pieces and chairs that take up too much space. The best approach is to measure before you start looking at furniture pieces. That way you won't find yourself disappointed when the pieces you like don't in the areas as you hoped they would. After you measure each area, envision what you want for each area. Even though space is limited you will still find a number of designs to accommodate your taste.

Do comparison shopping

After you decide what furniture pieces you want, it is a good idea to do some comparison shopping. There are a number of regular retail stores as well as online retailers that have a good variety of boat furniture to choose from. Most of these retailers are very competitive in pricing, so you should take time to look for sales and discounts.

Look for quality furniture

Sometimes quality furniture may seem a bit expensive, but you have to decide if buying cheaper furniture that won't last long is more cost effective than paying a little more for quality furniture that will last a long time. Furniture that is cheaply constructed will have to be replaced often, especially furniture that will be placed on the outside deck. Also, you may be able to find some quality used furniture, that will last longer than cheap new furniture.

Victor Epand is an expert consultant about model boats, boat parts, and model submarines. People have been experiencing houseboat living for many decades, especially in European and Asian countries. It may be something many more people are thinking about these days, considering the cost of ocean front homes.

Today, modern boats come with many more conveniences than they did years ago, but don't expect that things will be as normal as they would be living in an apartment or a house. The larger the boat is the more likely it is that you will have most of the conveniences that you are accustomed to. Space is a major factor when it comes to living on a boat. While boats do have storage space, you will still have to downsize your possessions quite a bit to get things to neatly fit on the boat. Before bringing anything on to the boat make sure it will fit through the door. Then you have to make sure there is an actual space for it on the boat.

Some larger boats come with a full bathroom that includes a bathtub. If you have a smaller or an older boat, the only option you will probably have is a shower. If you live in a marina you can get hooked up to the power and water supply. However, the water pressure won't be the same as you would get on land. The water will most likely come through a garden hose to get to your boat. Also, at most marinas you will have access to cable television or Satellite television while you are docked.

You can expect the kitchens to have smaller ovens and stoves than a house, and not much kitchen storage for can goods and supplies. But with some planning and careful shopping you will be able to make it work. Most boats will have a refrigerator with a freezer and some may have a dishwasher. Expect theses appliances to be rather small. Also these days some larger boats may have a washer and dryer. If you are looking at a boat without a washer and dryer you will have to find an alternate way of doing your laundry if there is no laundromat nearby.

Deciding to live on a boat will require some adjustments to your lifestyle. But Many people, after living on a boat for a while, find that they really don't miss the extra conveniences they had on land as much as they thought they would.

Victor Epand is an expert consultant about model boats, boat parts, and model submarines. Earlier, it was done at a very elementary level. Men used to sit on rocks that were scattered on riversides and keep their angles in line with the rivers. Sometimes, they caught a bounty. We mean the small fishes. At other times, all they got was nothing. Since that time, fishing as a sport has evolved a lot. Today it is followed both as a hobby and as a profession. In this regard, the role of California fishing is praiseworthy. It has given an array of options to the boaters and fishers alike.

There are myriad fishing centers in the city of California. Here you can catch hold of the corbina, bass, rockfish and halibut. Goleta pier is one of the more famous places in this context. Even invasive species like rays and sharks can be found here. It provides nice fishing amenity as well as access to an angler. Now, roughly 30 species can be found on the pier. In fact, per trip catch is also very high.

The California piers are simply blessed. You can even look out for the bass kelp, the white sturgeons and the pacific mackerels. Another one is the balboa pier. It is not entirely made for the purpose of fishing and fishing is at best a secondary occupation but it provides great depth and fishing facility at the corner of the 920 feet pier. Here you can look to catch the snovel guitarfish and bat rays with your squid baits.

Sacramento River also provides with many fishing opportunities. They provide with customized drift and jet boats. The jet boats are custom built with an average length of 24 feet. Fishing is done in an amply secure environment which is also very peaceful and lazy. So it does not matter whether you decide to fish on the Smith River or the Feathery River, you can look forward to the same laid-back ambience of fishing. In fact, this present day, there are also many definitive guide books which serve as an eye opener for fishing. They have all kinds of photographs in relation to fishing. They also have very informative write-ups which teach a lot.

Even California boating is developing into a huge industry. The "boating clean and green campaign" is hot today. It teaches various techniques of protecting the waterways from invasive species. It also preaches the value of safeguarding various marine ecosystems and habitats. The dock walkers get to know a lot about inspecting waterways for identifying what might turn out to be an intrusive breed of fish like the sharks.

If you possess a trailer boat, you can look to get easy access to the California waters. San Francisco bay also offers quite an amazing repertoire of boating facility. You can have fun in the Francisco bay or move towards northern California for catching the big prize. If a combination trip interests you then you can look forward to boating and fishing simultaneously. Ambience and amenities are great. All you need is awareness. Thankfully, even that is not missing in people of California.

Kevin Gillett is dedicated to share with you on hiking, camping, fishing and boating in California

Tips to Consider When Buying a Boat

For someone new to boating, buying a fishing boat can be a whole new experience in itself. Initially it might seem to be a daunting task, but the challenge of selecting the perfect fishing boat can eventually turn out to be a lot of fun too.

The first step to consider is whether you plan to fish in the ocean or other water bodies such as lakes. This is important because different types fishing boats cater to different water bodies.

If you want a boat to take you out on ocean cruises and overnight stays, the boat that you buy needs to have a hull. Such a boat is meant for riding the rough seas and is also comfortable for anglers in fishing.

The second thing that you should check before you choose to buy a boat is whether the boat comes with a warranty. If yes, you should really study the warranty closely as there are different kinds of warranties that could be written.

Thirdly, buy your boat from a dealer, because if found defective, the dealers will provide the repair services.

The NMMA is an agency that certifies whether a boat passes the agency's standards of excellence. Hence it is important to check whether the boat is certified by the NMMA when buying a fishing boat.

Finally, it boils down to how much fun you have while selecting the perfect fishing boat for yourself. The important thing to remember here is that if you look around hard enough and ensure that you have the best boat you can get for the price you will certainly find a boat that you would love to go sailing in time after time.

Guarantees Your Success Today Let me do the marketing for you while you sit back and collect checks. Surrounded by picturesque rolling hills, deep forests and waterfalls, over 1,500 houseboats cruise the quiet waters and explore the intimate nooks and coves of the hundred-mile-long lake.

Nearly 2,000 years ago, Lake Nemi, a small, volcanic lake near Rome, Italy, was the houseboating capital of the Holy Roman Empire and home to two lavish, recreational pleasure boats belonging to the notorious Roman Emperor Caligula. Even though the ships were deliberately pillaged and sunk soon after the unpopular emperor's assassination, their existence subsequently captured the imagination of historians, archaeologists and, in particular, a 15th century Catholic cardinal during the Renaissance and a 20th century Italian dictator named Benito Mussolini.

Digging up the truth

Through the centuries, Emperor Caligula's floating palaces were the stuff of legends and buried treasure. Lake Nemi fishermen claimed they could see the ships' ghostly underwater outlines.

In 1446, fourteen centuries after the ships sunk, the Renaissance Cardinal Don Prospero Colonna, Lord of Nemi, took on the daunting task of raising the historic ships; unfortunately, his efforts failed. It would take another 500 years before the ships would be successfully raised from their watery grave.

Mussolini and the 2,000-year-old tunnel

In the late 19th-century, the Italian government took charge of private citizens' efforts to salvage the ships. In 1928, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini used ancient Roman engineering genius to solve his modern-day problem.

The Romans had built a mile-long tunnel to help control Lake Nemi's water level and prevent flooding. Mussolini used the same tunnel to drain the lake over a three-year period and expose the historic ships.

The Nemi ships, as they are known, are the two largest Roman ships ever discovered and feature craftsmanship and new technology that astounded historians. The ships, an oared galley and a sailing vessel, each measured approximately 240 feet long and were lavishly decorated with mosaic floors, marble columns and bronze statues. Other artifacts uncovered included a bronze lion, leopard and fox heads.

After nearly 1,900 years at the bottom of Lake Nemi, Caligula's pleasure craft were finally rescued. Inside a frame building, teams of historians and archaeologists began a scholarly study of the remarkable ships' artifacts. The thrill of discovery was short-lived when, a mere decade later, the ships and the museum that displayed them burned down amidst the chaos of World War II.

Today a Lake Nemi museum tells the story of Caligula's extravagant houseboats and displays scale models, architectural drawings and rare artifacts that survived the fire. Outside, a life-size reconstruction of the sailing ship's hull is on display.

Meanwhile, back at Lake Cumberland

Throughout recorded history, palatial houseboats have been a favorite indulgence of royalty and the very wealthy. Believe it or not, most of them sink at the dock. There is no agency that keeps statistics on this, so the exact number is not known. However, if you were to ask any marine insurance company they would tell you that the number is quite high. If your boat sinks, you are bound to have a major problem whether it is insured or not. The loss of personal belongings and fuel or oil pollution fines are additional losses which are most likely not covered by your insurance policy.

What causes a boat to sink?

It is true that a large number of boats sink due to neglect. People often leave their boat at the marina for months without checking on it. But the primary reason boats sink is due to poor design and the use of inferior materials.

First, let's deal with poor design. It is a fact that 64% of all builders nationwide, do not have a trained boat designer on staff. This means that many boats are poorly designed by people with less than professional expertise. Another factor to consider is that style has taken precedence over function and practicality. Unfortunately, this often results in boats that are doomed to sink themselves. The poor designing that results in boats sinking can be broken down into two categories which are basic hull design and internal system failure.

Hull Design

Hull design problems are most common in boats under 40 feet and more often in boats under 30 feet. Obviously, the smaller the boat, the more prone it is to sinking simply because it will sink more quickly. The most common reason power boats sink is due to improper design of the cockpit. For sailboats, the most common cause of sinking is improper head installation, inadequate bilge pumps and battery systems that don't supply enough power to run the pumps.

Internal System Failure

Improper design or use of poor quality materials is the cause of a vast majority of boat sinkings. Internal system failures can be broken down into three main categories:

-Inadequate bilge pumping or battery capacity.
-Reverse siphoning due to errors in plumbing design.
-Failed through hull fittings or hoses.

Despite decades of design knowledge many builders continue to make these same mistakes every year by using inferior materials. It is hard to understand how a builder of a $100,000 boat can justify the use of twenty dollars worth of plastic through hull fittings, but it happens far too many times.

Victor Epand is an expert consultant about model boats, boat parts, and model submarines. You might which to turn to a local boat dealership to see what deals are on demo or used kayaks, take a look at literally thousands of print or online classified ads, or even find a great deal on eBay. All of these are viable options, but don't rush into purchasing a used or cheap kayak just because the seller says its in pristine condition.

Here are just a few of the points to consider when it comes to purchasing a used or second-hand kayak -

Its crucial to inspect a kayak for signs of previous damage or if its been patched before (in the case of an inflatable kayak). A lot of the repair jobs will be completed to a high standard, but if its done by a novice or a keen do-it-yourselfer it might be more of a ineffective or shoddy job. Even if the hull was professional repaired the damage might have resulted in structural damages that could of been missed. If just starting out in kayaking you'll want a kayak that can be depended upon and won't let you down as soon as set off down the river.

Take a moment to inspect all the parts; are these all working properly. If a kayak is fitted with a retractable skeg or rudder ask to do a on-water river test to see that the parts all function in the correct manner. If the seller isn't too keen on this idea than that might be an indication that something's amiss. Don't simply rely on the description in the ad or the sellers say so, take the time to actually view the kayak prior to making a commitment to buy.

Kayaks are designed for a variety of different purposes. If planning a solo fishing trip for example, its crucial to look at kayaks that offer stability, storage, and adequate space to attach kit, such as the rod holders and echo sounders. Its also important to look into the various hull materials. A lot of kayaks are built in Kevlar or a fiberglass material, but its also possible to located some fine kayaks in aluminum or wood.

And finally don't forget to look at the transportability of a kayak. If you've a SUV than the heavy-duty kayaks, such as the aluminum or wooden shouldn't be a problem. Although for a small family vehicle these might not be ideal. The easiest kayaks to transport are the foldable or Inflatables - these offer a compact and lightweight solution.

Just using some common sense and being cautious can often help greatly in a search for the ideal second-hand or cheap kayak for that next kayaking adventure.

If you're interested in getting a more detailed look at Sit On Top Kayaks, including a variety of boating tips and ideas, take a look at http://www.RecreationalWatercraft.com

The Compact and Portable Inflatable Kayaks

Inflatable kayaks are the ideal solution for those kayakers that don't which to lug about a heavy hard-shell craft. Designed similar to a hard-shell kayak, yet offers a variety of unique features to improve the durability and performance. And in some cases compact enough to be packed away in a duffel bag after use. Ideal for use on lakes, rivers, bays and mild estuaries.

One point to consider with these kayaks is its total payload capacity (body weight plus gear). A one person inflatable isn't going to have too much space to accommodate large quantities of equipment. If the intention is to transport a large amount of gear on a longer kayak excursion, than a inflatable might not be the ideal craft. Although, if the plan is to go for a day or two than a inflatable kayak might be the option.

Seaeagle, Innova, Advanced Elements and Aire all offer a fine selection of inflatable boats that are ideal for the explorer, fisherman or for the whitewater sports enthusiast.

A concept that's similar to the inflatable's is that of the foldable kayaks. A foldable kayak is often made of a flexible polypropylene material that breaks-down and folds flat or into a compact storage bag or of a canvas boatskin that stretches over a aluminum or wooden frame. The folding kayaks might not be as easy to transport as an inflatable, but its' still another option if looking to travel a distance to reach that perfect fishing spot.

If there's a concern about weight, transportation, space, or anything similar than one of the inflatable kayaks might be the perfect choice. The available storage space and the means of transport are often big considerations, so its wise to weigh up all the options prior to purchasing a kayak for a safe paddling adventure.

If you're interested in getting a more detailed look at the different Types Of Kayaks, including a variety of boating tips and ideas, take a look at http://www.RecreationalWatercraft.com

Kayak Storage - Storage Solutions For the Canoe Or Kayak

When it comes to kayak storage there are a variety of options. Some of the popular choices including suspending the kayak on a storage rack, using a wall mounted cradle or to use one of the free standing stands. Stands are also ideal for cleaning a kayak, to install equipment or to keep the inside clean and dry.

One solution to kayak storage is a set of lightweight, but sturdy wall cradles. A lot of companies offer a J-shaped cradle in a steel that's protected with neoprene pads to avoid damage to the hull. It's a simple case of hooking these cradles onto the wall of the storage shed or garage. A quick and easy way to securely store a single or tandem kayak off the floor and safe for the next trip.

If lacking wall storage space in the garage opt for one of the innovative storage hoist systems. A more expensive option to that of the J-cradles, but with limited space, this is the ideal solution. A lift or pulley hoist system can store the kayak up and out of the way at ceiling level. Another benefit to this storage system is the ability to place the kayak on the roof of the vehicle with ease. A simple solution to raising and lowering a canoe or kayak in seconds that's easy for one person to operate.

A more traditional method to storing the kayak off the floor is with a storage rack or stand. Offered in a choice of designs, such as the foldable, compact and easy to store stands to those of a solid construction in need of more space. Additionally, the foldable stands are ideal if in need of a portable storage method.

If you've invested in that dream kayak or canoe, there's no reason not to invest a little more on a suitable storage arrangement. And with the choice of kayak storage options on offer there is no reason to store it in fashion that could damage it.

If you're interested in getting a more detailed look at the Kayak Hoist systems, including a variety of boating tips and ideas, take a look at http://www.RecreationalWatercraft.com

Yellowstone Kayaking - Kayak Rentals and Tours in Yellowstone Park

The Yellowstone National Park is a favorite destination for millions of vacationers each year. For instance a place to put your beer cooler, set out your lounge chair or just a place to clean your fish and keep the mess out of the boat.

So what should you look for in a swim platform? Well, check out the tips below and you'll know way more than most on what to look for and how to shop for a swim platform. Swim platforms can be made from several different materials. In the past many swim platforms were made from Teak but these days most swim platforms are made from aluminum or fiberglass, truthfully though fiberglass is your best bet.

Fiberglass is strong, light and if it does get dinged or damaged, it's a simple matter to fix so it looks brand-new again. If you go to the time, trouble and expense of getting a swim platform, then by all means get one that's the full width of your boat, and about 30 inches deep.

You've probably seen those dinky token swim platforms that you can just barely stand on, this is not what you want. Another thing about a swim platform, make sure that inside its reinforced plywood. And of course sealed 100% with a gel coat finish.

Be sure to ask for references and to see pictures of past swim platform jobs. You don't want your boat to look like someone stuck a booger on the back of it. Make sure your vendor can color match your boat, and color match a feature stripe. You want your new swim platform to look as if it came from the factory with your boat.

Another important cosmetic item is trim molding. A heavy rubber molding trims out the top edge so the swim platform melds perfectly with your boat and helps protect your boat from any light bumps. And finally safety. Does the top surface have a nonskid material rolled into the gel coat or can you get a foam type of nonskid surface instead. You'll want to be sure to get one or the other.

A swim platform is best appreciated in pictures. Boats are like cars and trucks in that they need to have maintenance done on them as often as possible especially if you take your boat out a lot. What are the common issues that plaque boat engines and the owners.

Overheating - It is not uncommon for a boat's engine to overheat. With all kinds of items being thrown into the world's lakes, streams, rivers and oceans, it's almost inevitable that something will get sucked into the water intake. Be sure you check this area first. Should there be something stuck inside, remove the item and wait for the engine to cool off. After a bit of time has passed, try to restart the engine. Sometimes, trash isn't the problem though.

Another culprit to an engine overheating is the water pump impeller has blown. It's best to have this spare part on board. However, most persons will not so what do you do to fix the problem and get back to shore? Use the drain plug located in the engine's water jacket. Using a funnel, pour fresh water into it. While it won't completely fix your problem, it does help in that you can slowly make your way back to the shoreline. However, you have to keep watch on your temperature gauge. If it seems like it is starting to get hot, stop and let it cool down. Depending on how far out you are will depend on how quick you get back to the shore.

Oil Gasket - If your boat won't start, check your oil gasket. If it's leaking, that can be a culprit. All you have to do is replace it with another gasket. However, most people do not have spare gaskets lying in their toolkit. That means you need to come up with a way to make a temporary one. This is when you can use a marine chart. Cut out a temporary gasket from the chart, adding layers to it. In your haste, you may accidentally cut out the information you need. Be sure you watch where you cut.

Spark Plug Wire - Spark plug wires that have cracked can short out especially if the day is rainy or it is rather humid. When this occurs, your boat engine is likely to misfire. Be sure you keep duct tape in your toolkit to close up the wires and keep wetness out. Be sure you cover every crack you find so it doesn't short out. This will work until you can replace the spark plug wires.

Being prepared is essential to fixing your engine quickly. Carry spare parts with you that may be necessary to repairing your engine. Be sure you have tools in your boat to help you out. Most importantly, be sure you have the necessary information that will help you to fix your boat. If you need to, keep a booklet on hand.

Victor Epand is an expert consultant about model boats, boat parts, and model submarines. Below are 5 top tips to help you with taking your best mate out on the water with you.

1) Consider taking your dog out on a trial run first. See how your dog goes with being on the water and with being on a boat. You don't want to have a big trip planned only to find out your dog has other ideas.

2) Encourage the dog to come on board the boat and make him/her feel welcome. Offer the dog praise and perhaps a few food treats once on board. This will encourage the dog to see the boat as a nice place.

3) Once you are off on your boating trip, it is a good idea to harness or secure your dog down if it moves around a lot. You don't want your dog jumping off the boat once you are at high speed. Worse still you do not want your dog jumping off the back when you don't notice or your dog may become lost at sea. A dog lifejacket is another thing to consider. They are cheap and will help your dog swim. Many people use them anytime they take their dog swimming as it helps with buoyancy.

4) Plan rest breaks if possible. You do not want your dog doing it's business on your boat deck so consider a short stop every hour or so. If this is impossible consider setting aside a place on board where the dog can go. You could put something down such as a plastic liner to save staining your deck. Keep bringing the dog to this point every hour or so and it will soon realize it is the place to go. Remember once the dog has done it's business there give it lots of praise and encouragement.

5) Keep all gear on board stowed in a correct location. Misplaced hooks are a common hazard for dogs so make sure these get put away safely. Also try to hide your bait or your dog may just decide to eat it all when you are not looking.

Sticking to these points will ensure your boat voyage with your dog will be both a safe and rewarding trip.

James Fletcher is a boating and fishing enthusiast. Their toys just get bigger. Boats are expensive toys for men. For some they are a means to providing sustenance while for others they are a source of recreation and leisure. In both cases taking care of them is very important as boats don't come cheap. They are exposed to extreme weather conditions and the almost constant contact with water leads to a lot of wear and tear. As a result, taking care of your boat and keeping it in good shape becomes a challenge.

The difficult maintenance detracts somewhat from the fun of sailing for most of us. Let's face it. We want the amusement without the hassle. Is there a way to spend as little time as possible on looking after the boat and still enjoy sailing? The answer is "yes". You ask how. Answer is simple. Invest in a good boat cover.

There is a myriad of choices available in the market as far as boat covers go. Choosing the right one that protects your boat best is not an easy choice to make. There are several factors you have to be taken into consideration before purchasing one such as size, material used, and most importantly fittings and so on. Now how do you decide which one best suits your needs? Here is a look at the different kind of boat covers that will help you in making up your mind.

1. Custom Boat Covers:

If you are not concerned about the cost and simply want the best for your boat tehn getting a custom cover is your best choice. These are designed to your specific needs and take into consideration the model and make of your boat therefore providing the best possible fitting. You get to choose what fabric you want depending on the weather conditions your boat is most exposed to. Every single minute detail is taken into account while dealing with the fit as that plays the most important part in protecting your boat. Moreover, a wide choice of colors and accessories is available to the customer. One point to keep in mind while choosing color is to avoid black as these may damage the electronic parts of your boat.

2. Universal Boat Covers:

Universal Boat covers are ready-made and available for immediate purchase. These are the best choice for people who are short on cash. They offer a low cost solution for the safety and maintenance of your boat. These are available in a large variety of sizes so you will find one that would fit your boat. The best place to look for information about boat covers is the internet and you can also buy these online. Special discounts are also offered by some sites from time to time. Have you though it all through? How much will you spend? What style of boat do you want? What will you be using the boat for? Below is some information regarding what to consider when buying a boat.

Firstly, look at how much you are willing to spend. Try to spend as much as you can to get the biggest and newest boat you can afford. It is always better to spend a little more upfront rather than buying a cheap boat and spending more in the long run 'doing it up' and trying to keep it up to standard.

If possible try to share the costs of boating with someone else. Boats are costly especially considering you will most likely only use it a dozen times a season. If possible share the upfront and ongoing costs with a partner. Sharing the costs will allow you to get a bigger, newer and safer boat as you will only have to spend half the amount you would than if you were buying it on your own.

Do your research before buying a boat. Look at what boats suits your needs. Consider what you will be using the boat for. Consider how many people you will have on board and where you will be using the boat. Once all these questions are answered you will have a fair idea what style and size boat you will be chasing.

Finally, get a boat inspection. Always invest a small amount of money to get a trained eye to look over the boat prior to purchase. Make sure this person is independent and not associated with the company you are buying the boat from. Make sure the individual looks at the motor and the hull and gives you a condition report. This may just save you from buying a lemon and save you thousands of dollars in the long run.

Ultimately, remember to have fun. Buying a boat should be both a rewarding and exciting experience. If you do your homework you will be well prepared to get the boat that you are after.

James Fletcher is a boating and fishing enthusiast. It's not different than keeping with the maintenance of a land vehicle such as a car or truck. It must be taken care of and given the proper maintenance and have the proper parts that will fit so it will work once you bring the boat out onto the water. How do you make sure your boat parts are working properly if it has been stored for the winter?

Six Tips to Check Your Boat and Boat Parts

Make sure you do an inspection before you try and take it out. You want to be sure that all of the parts will be in working order.

First, start with the engine. If it wasn't changed before the winter, change the engine oil. Check the out-drive oil as well to make sure everything is good there. You'll also want to replace your oil filter while you are at it.

Second, check the battery of your boat. If you have water in your batter, be sure it stays full of water. When it's dry, it's no longer good. Use a battery tester to check out the amps and volts. If nothing seems to work on it, then you may need a new battery.

Third, it's time to fill up the cooling system. You should already know to drain it before the winter struck to avoid freezing lines. Be sure you examine the hoses for any cracks and empty out the strainer.

Fourth, the boat's gas tank should have been full no moisture had a chance to form. Make sure that the fuel filter has been changed and its lines were not cracked. It's not uncommon to find these lines cracked from the winter temperatures.

Fifth, be sure you clean out the distributor. To do this, you'll need to take its cap off. Wintertime can corrode distributors. Once you check it out, be sure the connections are completely hooked back up.

Sixth, check all of the boat's belts. Any belt that seems too loose should be changed as it is worn. To check if a belt is worn out try pushing it down. It should push down just slightly, not significantly. The alternator belt on your boat can wear out faster than any others. How else can you check if there is a worn belt on your boat? Look for some black soot near the pulley.

While these are not the only parts you should check on your boat, they are vital to de-winterizing your boat for a summer of fun.

Victor Epand is an expert consultant about model boats, boat parts, and model submarines. Below is a list of locations where you can look to find the new boat you are after.

1). Internet - The internet is a great tool in finding things for sale. You may find many sites from all over the world selling boats. It is also easy to find boats from boat stores in your area. This allows you to look at a large amount of boats in a small amount of time with just a click of a few buttons. It also allows you to instantly see pictures of boats which helps you to find the one you are really after.

Although looking on the internet for boats is a great idea you should always remember a few things. Sometimes the sellers don't update the boats as quickly as they should so you should always ring up or email a shop before you drive out to see a boat that you have seen on the internet. Also always be careful of deals that are 'too good to be true'. Many people try to use the internet as a tool to con people of their money so always be vigilant.

2). The Newspaper - The local newspaper is always a good source of new and second hand boats for sale. Many retailers will also place their shops adverts in the pages. The newspaper is great at providing up to date information weekly. If you ring someone from the paper over a boat you should always have a list of questions to ask first. Consider asking how old the boat is, why are they selling it, how much have they used it and what condition it is in? Try to build up as much information as possible so you can rule out as many possible boats as possible.

The main problem with looking in newspapers is that you can only get very limited information. Most boats for sale in a newspaper will have no pictures, so you are solely relying on the seller to paint the picture for you in regards to the condition of the boat. And what seller is going to tell you their boat is in bad condition?

3). A third way to look for boats is to get out there and look around. Most marina's, harbors or boat ramps will have boats for sale. Have a look around at boating clubs, consider asking people working there if they know of anyone selling. This local knowledge may help you find a boat perhaps even before the owner has listed it as for sale. Let everyone know that you are looking for a boat and some people you may know may have a friend who can help you out.

Get out there and don't be afraid to ask questions. See as many boats as possible so you can compare boats of a similar price. If possible, try narrowing your search to 2 boats in the end, so you can play each off against the other to get the best possible price.

James Fletcher is a boating and fishing enthusiast. Now it is time to deck it out! So what gear do you need on board? Below is a definitive list that every boater must read.

The items listed below are the items that pretty much any boat should have on board. The items range from safety equipment that is required to comfort items that are sure to make your boating trips more enjoyable.

1) Safety Equipment - Every boat no matter what the size should have required safety equipment. Never go out on your boat without it. Safety items include but not limited too an anchor, flares, life jackets and marine radio.

2) Petrol - Obviously you need fuel to go out on your boat. You should always take at least 50% more fuel than you are expecting to use.

3) Water - Remember to take water, and lots of it. Dehydration occurs a lot out on the open water. People lose track of time and after a full day in the sun most people will become dehydrated. The trick is to drink small amounts regularly. Be careful to make sure children drink heaps of water too.

4) Esky & Ice - This is more for comfort but an esky or chiller box will help keep your food and drinks cold. It can also be used to place any caught fish inside and can also be used as an informal seat.

5) Bait & Fishing gear- If you want to catch fish you are going to need some bait. Shrimp (prawns), octopus and squid are just a few good varieties. Always remember once you have finished boating to take all the bait off the boat with you. Nothing is worse than bait sitting in a boat until the next time you use it. On the plus side however at least you would have some maggots for bait! And don't forget the hook, line and sinkers.

6) Suncream, Hat, Polaroid Glasses & Clothes - Sun protection is vital when out on a boat. Keep out of the sun as much as possible. If you must be in the sun make sure you are wearing all these items. Polaroid glasses are especially valuable for fishing as they cut out the glare from the reflection of the water.

7) Towel - An obvious one but remember to not leave home without it.

8) People - boating on your own is a little boring and also quite dangerous. Always try to take at least another person out with you. Not only will they give you company but they may also help you out if trouble arises.

So remember, before you go boating make sure you have everything you need. Why not join part of a boating group? Read on to find out why joining a boating group is such a great idea.

If your new to boating or even if you have been boating for a long time, joining a boating group is a great idea. Boating groups usually meet up a few times a year to go on a big convoy trip.

Obviously, as soon as you join a boating group you are sure to meet a whole lot of new people. This is great when boating as you will find more people to share your passion with. The people you will meet will likely be boating enthusiast such as yourself and you can share your stories and experiences with each other. The more boating friends you have the better.

These groups are also great as they help you learn the skills needed to successfully operate a boat. Often these groups will go on a long convoy voyage where instructors advise on many different aspects on boating. Learning how to use charts, navigating reefs and conducting a beach landing are just some of the exercises an instructor might do with you. The best thing about learning it here is that it is in a friendly environment where you will get professional knowledge and advice from people that go boating almost everyday.

These boating groups will also teach participants all aspects of safety. They will usually show you how to operate a flare, what to do if your boat capsizes and many more exercises. The beauty of these exercises is that you get to see them in real life rather than just reading about how to do it from a book. This experience is invaluable in an emergency situation.

Finally, boating groups are fun. It helps you meet friends and gives you a reason to get out on the water. Many of these groups go out for dinner and drinks in the evening where stories are jokes are passed on well into the night. So have a look in your local area and sign up to a boating group today.

James Fletcher is a boating and fishing enthusiast. How do you make sense of all the models and styles out there?

The first time yacht buyer needs to avoid buying on emotion and take a hard look at what they intend on doing with the boat. Making the wrong choice will be a major disappointment in the long run and perhaps cost you thousands.

To start, are you a sailor or a motor cruiser? Some like the romance of a sailboat with the image of tropical islands in the picture; some don't want the hassle of the sails, rigging etc. But a sailboat is very inexpensive to operate if your plans include traveling to far-away places. Still, power boating is not expensive if you choose the right boat. Powerboats generally come well designed with all of the creature comforts you could every need; generally more so than all but the largest of sailboats. And you don't need to learn all of the sailing techniques either.

Once you have assessed your yachting preference you can then decide on what you intend on doing with it. Are you going to sail, cruise or fish from it? Of course, you could fish from anything if you wish, but yachts made for fishing are much different than those built for cruising.

How often will you use your new yacht? I always say that there are "boaters" and "boat owners". Boaters use their boats; boat owners just like to say they own a yacht as their boats rarely leave the dock. Some boaters may be full-time liveaboards using their boats as their home every day. Others may just use their boats on nice weekends when time permits.

Next is the cost of yacht ownership. You must take this into consideration. The purchase price is almost like a down payment. Boating has its costs that you need to be aware of. If you are mechanically inclined, you will find that the costs are not substantial. Most boat owners do the majority of work themselves. I have posting at my Cruising Center website about the specifics of boating costs that breaks it down into each expense. Feel free to take a look.

So thus far we have determined what type of boater we are, so we know what style of yacht generally appeals to us, we know how much we expect to use it and about what to expect in the upkeep of her. So far so good!

Now comes the hard part; how to choose just the right one? I have developed a purchase checklist that I use with my customers to let them specify the critical features of a boat. This allows them to choose features that they can live without and those that are features that are must-haves. That checklist then becomes the basis for the perfect boat search. When I am working with customers, I then look for used yachts that best meet the customer's wants recognizing that boat purchases usually involve some compromise. Rarely do I find a boat with all of the desired features.

In the looking phase, I always say that you'll know it when the right boat comes along; it will "talk" to you. Any potential boat will have the lines, the feel and the character that appeals to you. Don't settle for anything less than that pleases you.

But what about the cost of that used yacht? How do you know you are getting a fair deal? Borrowing from another posting at the Cruising Center about the True Value of Boats, good boats always command higher prices, always! A newer boat in poor condition will bring less than an older boat in good condition always! Never buy a yacht based upon the price alone or you'll be selling it within 6 months.

And should you complete a survey, yes it's always recommended. Choose a knowledgeable surveyor that has experience with your desired boat. Ask him for references too. If you are working with a reputable Yacht Broker, he will recommend several top-shelf surveyors but will insist you choose the one you want.

And lastly, locate a Buyer's Broker to represent you in your search, selection and purchase. It will save you lots of time, money and a lot of disappointment.

The author, Mike Dickens is a veteran liveaboard boat owner, Yacht Broker and owner/operator of Paradise Yachts.

Enjoy Fishing Or a Leisurely Cruise on a Pontoon Boat

You can avail various kinds of boats in Florida. All boating agencies in Florida have a fair number of pontoon boats. This is because these boats are easy to own and are always high on demand.

What is a pontoon boat?

A pontoon is a flat-bottomed boat which is built to support a structure while afloat. It has a base made of cylindrical objects such as barrels or pipes or even boxes made of metal. This base supports a simple platform, on which a structure resembling a house or an open frame with a roof is built. Such boats are usually used for leisure fishing.

Why use a pontoon boat?

Pontoon boats are the most user friendly boats for fishing or a gentle cruise. These boats offer you the flexibility of covering great distance. With them you don't have to bother of manoeuvring and hauling like you have to do with a canoe or small boat. These boats are simple to operate and rarely sink.

From an owner's perspective, these boats, even when equipped with engines of over 200hp, are less expensive to insure than a normal boats. Their shallow draft minimizes damages due to under water collisions and being run aground. In terms of capacity to price these boats offer a lot.

Because of its high demand, used pontoon boats are bought and sold by both agencies and individuals. Before buying one from a person or agency you must ensure that he is a member of national boating industry association. S a member has to abide by industry code of practice; you can get pontoons which have not been roughly handled.

If the pontoon is on a trailer you need to inspect it minutely and make sure they are in sound condition. Try to learn more about all the work done on the boat, including steering maintenance, engine repairs, and other works. If possible you should take it out for a sea trial.

If you love, boating or fishing, try to own a personal pontoon boat, as a part of your boating gear.

Richard Thompson a Florida boat club member writes articles on boat clubs and oat rental agencies for http://www.adventureboatclub.net

Cruising the British Virgin Islands on a Sailing Yacht Charter - 4 Spots Not to Miss!

British Virgin Islands (BVI's) is a group of approximately fifty islands and outcroppings. The BVI's are considered an easy sailing area as the islands are all within sight of one another so that navigation can be done by Dead Reckoning. And, The Sir Francis Drake Channel, which in right in the middle of these islands, is well protected for comfortable sailing. The 4 spots in this article, not to be missed, are easily included in a one week sailing yacht charter in the BVI's.

Spot #1; The Baths

Situated on the southern tip of Virgin Gorda, the Baths is one of the most well known and popular landmarks to visit in the BVI's. Gigantic granite boulders and half submerged rocks line the southern seashore of Virgin Gorda, creating grottos, tunnels, and arches. Sandy beaches are lined with coconut palms and the area offers a dramatic and lovely place to swim, snorkel and explore.
A second beach in the area, called Devil's Bay, is reached through a maze-like passage through the boulders and shallower grottos. The path is lined with ladders and ropes to ease the hike along steeper rocks.

Spend time exploring the area, with tidal pools of pristine clear waters, and white sand. Snorkeling is great, however more for the marine life, than coral, as this is not a reef area. Due to the various inlets and pools created by the landscape, marine life is caught here in the pools with each tidal change. Be sure to pay attention to the safety flags as certain weather can cause currents with heavy undertows in this area. However, even if swimming is cautioned against, there are always the rocks to climb and the white sandy beaches for sunning.

Spot #2; Bitter End Yacht Club

In the North Sound, located at the northern end of Virgin Gorda, is the home of the well known Bitter End Yacht Club.

The North Sound, once home to pirates Sir Francis Drake and Sir John Hawkins, was a remote quiet anchorage, rarely visited for centuries. In the early 60's, a rustic bar and cottages existed clinging to the point of land on the north end of North Sound, which was a destination intended for adventurous sailors. The Hokins Family arrived, fell in love with the area, and built the resort into what it is today, which while offering resort style accommodations and services, still runs in true Caribbean style, using generators for electricity and cisterns for collecting rainwater.

The North Sound is still an attractive anchorage, made more attractive by shoreside establishments like the Bitter End Yacht Club. While in the anchorage, take advantage of the shoreside services offered at the Bitter End Yacht Club, which include a marina, pool, beach, water sports, restaurants and bars, and even a spa. The Clubhouse Steak and Seafood Grille has been a yachting landmark for years. This open air restaurant sports the burgees from hundreds of yachts and yacht clubs from all over the world. These flags flutter gently from the rafters in the breeze made from the numerous ceiling paddle fans, evoking a colonial Caribbean feel. The Clubhouse Steak and Seafood Grille buffet is well known for homemade soups, and breads, and if you have not tried a grilled Caribbean lobster, basted with butter, this would be the time and place for this uniquely Caribbean treat.

Spot #3: Jost Van Dyke

Jost Van Dyke is a four mile-long barefoot paradise known for its casual lifestyle, fine beaches and beachfront restaurants and bars. The Painkiller, a drink made from the Tortola local rum called Pusser's Rum was created here at the world famous yachtsman's bar named "Foxy's", named after Foxy, the long time Owner of this bar and restaurant.

Perhaps Foxy's is best known as the spot to celebrate New Year's Eve. Yachtsmen started congregating in Great Harbor several decades ago to ring in the New Year at Foxy's. This has now become such a tradition, that it is wise to get to Great Harbor a day in advance for a good spot to anchor. As the New Year draws near, the harbor erupts with activity and the buzz of dinghies heading here and there, throughout the harbor, as everyone visits friends, and ultimately heads ashore for Foxy's, to hail in the new year, dancing on the beach under the stars.

Although Jost measures just four by three miles, the island is rich in history. It's been home to Arawak Indians, Caribs, Dutch, Africans and English. Jost was the birth place of William Thorton, architect of the US Capitol, and John Coakley Lettsome, founder of the London Medical Society, was born on nearby Little Jost.

Great Harbour is sheltered by small mountains and offers moorings. In White Bay, just around the corner from Great Harbour, is the Soggy Dollar Bar, so named as generally patrons must swim ashore for the cool Caribbean cocktails. All patrons lined up on the bar stools are usually dripping wet, including, as you probably guessed, the money in their pockets.

Jost Van Dyke has other offerings. Trace the old trails that connect the island. Explore the overgrown ruins of sugar mills. In the fall and winter, watch whales and dolphins from a hilltop. Or visit the bubbling pot at the East End, where the foaming sea forms a natural Jacuzzi. And you can stop by Foxy's newest watering hole, Foxy's Taboo, on Diamond Cay, at East End. You could walk across to Little Jost or take the dinghy to deserted Sandy Cay, the perfect castaway island for your own beach barbeque.

Stop #4: Soper's Hole

Tucked away, on the western tip of Tortola, is Soper's Hole and Soper's Hole Marina. This area, also called the West End, is home as well to a British Virgin Islands customs clearance office with a dock that is used by ferries and yachtsmen alike. Across the harbor from the customs clearance office, on the other side of a small anchorage is Soper's Hole Marina. The pirate Blackbeard, who real name was Edward Teach, once made his home in Soper's Hole from 1715 to 1718. Called a "Hole" because of the protection offered by the deep cut of the anchorage into the surrounding hills, the harbor allows yachts to anchor with good weather protection. Soper's Hole is a nice spot to stop while on charter in the British Virgin Islands as the same protection and calm anchorage that made Soper's Hole attractive to Blackbeard, is attractive to yachtsmen today.

Surrounding the dock area are a series of brightly painted Caribbean style buildings creating a sense of a traditional Caribbean marketplace. Browse the shops for artwork, crafts and jewelry made from a stone local to the British Virgin Islands, or stop for a bite to eat at the Pusser's Landing Restaurant and store.

Pusser's Rum was the original rum of the British royal Navy and for over 300 years, the seamen on board a Royal Navy ship were issued a tot of rum, each day with a double tot of rum issued just prior to battle. The on board Royal Navy rum was doled out by the Purser on board, and so eventually the Purser's rum became known as Pusser's rum. In 1970, the daily rum tot tradition was abolished in the British Royal Navy and the recipe of the blend of 5 different West Indian rums was sold privately to the Owner of Pusser's Ltd. This company was established in Tortola and the same rum served for over 300 years to the British Royal Navy was bottled and has now been sold to the public since 1980

Pusser's Rum quickly became a favorite of visiting yachtsmen when cruising in the British Virgin Islands. A percentage of the proceeds from each bottle sold now go to the Royal British Navy Sailors Fund, known commonly as the Tots Fund. Soon after 1980, the now infamous drink, The Painkiller was born, only properly made with Pusser's Rum. The Painkiller is now served in a variety of locations in the BVI's. The best Painkillers, however, are claimed to be served at the Pusser's restaurants, including Pusser's Landing Restaurant in Soper's Hole, where the Pusser's Painkiller is ordered by number according to the number of shots of rum poured in each drink.

Attached to the Pusser's Landing Restaurant is a Pusser's Rum store selling products branded with the Pusser's official label. However within those months, your choice of what dates to pick for crewed yacht charter should depend more on what you want to see and do rather than what the weather does. In online weather information, you might see that August and July are supposed to be drier than June. And, most people think that August will be warmer than June.

In actuality, this all varies from summer to summer in Alaska, with no rhyme or reason. The dates you choose for yacht charter in Alaska should not be based on the weather. Your dates for crewed yacht charter in Alaska during the summer charter season should be based on the wild and marine life that you might want to see, and the activities you might want to do, as the migration patterns of wild and marine life are far more predictable than the weather

Weather in Alaska from mid May to mid September can change from 50 degrees Fahrenheit to 80 degrees Fahrenheit at any time, and does so on a daily basis, not on a monthly basis. At anytime during the summer cruising season in Alaska it may be cooler, warmer, drier or wetter, and again, all in the same day. And, your activity can create a weather change, such as if you are up under the calving face of a glacier, it may feel colder as the glacier ice slices through the air into the water below, sending a rush of cooler air and water your way.

If you don't like the current weather during your crewed yacht charter in Alaska, stick around 10 minutes and the weather will change. On a side note, dressing for Alaska summer weather does require thought. Recommendations are to dress in a series of layers that can easily be peeled off or put back on as the weather changes minute by minute throughout the day.

What is more predictable than the weather in Alaska is the migration of the wild and marine life, which should influence your charter date choice if you have particular wild or marine life that you want to see, or if you have particular activities you want to do. For the summer cruising season in Alaska, the wise person picks charter dates and charters around their interests, not the weather.

The summer salmon run in Alaska is famous. Salmon are anadromous, which means that they are birthed in fresh water, make their way to salt water to live and return to fresh water to spawn and die. At the end of their life span, salmon return from salt water to their natal stream, which is the stream in which they were born, to fight up that stream to spawn dozens of eggs for new life. Both males and females return to their natal stream, as the female carries the eggs, which the male fertilizes. This ritual marks the life span of each salmon, which is ended spawning in the natal stream from whence that salmon emerged.

This ritual of returning up the natal stream for spawning follows a general summer schedule, which starts in the beginning of the summer cruising season, with the salmon gathering in the salt waters off of the mouths of many fresh water streams in Alaska. At this point, in May and June, there are plenty of salmon for salt water trolling for fishing, and the bears and sea lions that dine on this fish are patrolling the beaches and shorelines for dinner. As the salmon enter their natal stream in July and August to fight upstream, the bears will move up stream with them inland, and away from the shoreline.

If one of your purposes for charter in Alaska is to see bears, it is better to go in May and June, while the bears are along the coast. For in May and June, bears are often seen patrolling the shoreline, fishing for the salmon in salt water. As the salmon move upstream later in the summer, the bears move inland and upstream and are harder to see.

Fly fishing is a great sport in Alaska; however the species fished for in Alaska when fly fishing varies throughout the summer, based on the migration patterns of the fish. In June the Steelhead and Cutthroat Trout will pack the streams heading up river for excellent fly fishing, while in July and August, the fly fishing will be for salmon. Some trout species are able to survive this fight upstream for spawning and return again to salt water, however for salmon, this is the end of the line, and they show it. July and August are great for fly fishing for salmon, but those salmon caught, are not the best for eating, as they have begun to deteriorate pending the end of their lives. Eating salmon are better if caught in salt water, and there are always salmon in the salt waters of Alaska in various stages of life.

For salt water fishing, there is no place better for Halibut fishing than Alaska, where catching a Barn Door Halibut, which is what the fish are called if over 200 pounds, is a real possibility. Halibut fishing is from April through October, however if your heart is set on catching a Barn Door Halibut, the best chance is in mid July.

Even as the bears retreat up the stream banks inland to fish for salmon in July and August, the moose, wild goats, and deer come down from the mountains closer to shore as the ice and snow melt as summer progresses. In August, moose, wild goats and deer can more readily be seen closer to shore.

Whales are back in Alaska beginning in mid May to June, and stay in Alaskan waters feeding throughout the summer, in pods, with a bubble net feeding pattern, that must be seen to be believed. Grey Whales return first and can only be seen in May, just passing through to their summer home in the Bering Sea. Humpback Whales begin to appear in Alaska in May. A good charter yacht captain will be keeping track of the various pods of Humpback Whales as they move throughout the summer, to be sure to cruise in whale areas for each charter.

The famous American Bald Eagle returns to Alaska as early as April and stays around all summer nesting. There can be as many as 100 or more Bald Eagles in any given anchorage, and watching these magnificent birds fly is a treat.

And of course, no matter when during the summer season, you choose to charter, there are always virgin forests to visit, which are only a myth in most locations, and shoreside towns to visit, each with their history, culture, and gift shops.

So, whenever you do a crewed yacht charter in Alaska during the summer season, there is plenty to see and do. However, if you have a particular must do activity, time your charter, not for the weather, but for the migration and various activities of wild and marine life.

Missy Johnston is a crewed Yacht Charter Broker and has been booking charters in Alaska for the last 20 years. Missy has also been there several differnet times during the summer on charter and seen firsthand the differences in marine and wild life movements throughout the summer season. As a boating enthusiast myself, with a vessel in the great Pacific Northwest, I knew that most things in life don't hold up to the marine environment that we keep our boats in. That's precisely why we buy most replacement parts from a marine parts purveyor and not an auto parts dealer, unless we don't care how long they last.

I began my research by asking myself "how can these systems be marine alarms, if they aren't modified in any way to withstand the harsh environment?" After inspection of many units and specifications, the answer was clear. They are not worthy of being called marine security systems!

Without being designed to withstand environmental issues such as salt and/or damp air, constant vibration, temperature extremes, etc. the systems will likely not be functioning soon after the warrantee's expire. To be truly a marine grade security system, you need to design the product from the ground up, just for the purpose they will be functioning in. Marine alarm system controls should be housed in NMEAIII enclosures (rated for water resistance), have all the electronics coated and potted, and have an epoxy seal over all the components that are necessary for function, but not needed for user interface.

The blatant misuse of common household motion detectors is a disaster when used on boats. When using these devices, the bumping of a vessel on a dock, the window treatments swaying as the boat moves in the wakes and winds, the extreme amount of sunlight that lands on the vessel, creatures entering protected areas, etc. will do little more than cause constant false alarms. Instead motion should be detected by hidden pressure sensors placed under decks and ladders, to warn of intruders boarding the vessel. If interior cabin motion detectors are used at all, they need to be dual technology devices that are designed to need two technology violations in order to be used in boats. In addition to the pressure sensors protecting the decks, marine grade contacts should be placed on doors, hatches and lockers, preventing entry into restricted areas.

Additional devices that are made just for boat security systems, which will help you, supervise important boat systems include:

* Bilge sensors (high water detectors in case of bilge pump failure)
* AC detectors (monitors shore power)
* DC detectors (monitors low battery banks)
* Temperature detectors (monitors temperature extremes in cabins and engine rooms)
* Smoke detectors (early interior fire protection)
* GPS tracking antennas (monitors boat movement, speed, coarse and heading)
* Sounder chimes (lets you know of violations when your below, with the system disarmed)

You can use your marine alarm as a standalone system that will warn of violations with a loud siren and flashing lights, or you can add a monitoring device for remote notification.

It's important to make sure that your monitoring device is also designed specifically for the marine environment, just as the alarm control and all its devices should be.

Here are some available marine alarm systems, monitoring options:

Cellular: A cellular communicator is triggered from your alarm system, by a security or supervisory violation. The cellular communicator determines which numbers are to be called, (based on the type of signal) and notifies you via text message of the violation. The cellular communicators use a pre-paid SIM card that you keep a desired amount of minutes on, and recharge over the phone as needed with your credit card. On some marine systems, the cellular communicators will both text message you, and give you a voice message of the exact condition if you answer the phone. These types of units will also allow you to enter commands for arming/disarming the system, turning lights and appliances on/off, and even listen in on the vessel and talk to onboard parties via the alarm control and your cell phone. You can also add a GPS unit to these cellular units for vessel tracking via the internet. Cellular units are best used on inland waters and in places where the boat will not be away from a cell towers reach, or in roaming conditions.

Satellite: These units monitor all conditions as above with the cellular units, but have worldwide communications capability. These units have GPS tracking ability as well. They require a satellite subscription which gives you a personal webpage for your boat. The unit texts you if there are any violations and will allow you completely control tracking and vessel systems through the website. Some systems combine cellular control and reporting with satellite trackers for when the vessel is out of cell range.

Internet Protocol: This type of system texts and emails you of vessel alarm and supervisory conditions. You must have internet access onboard to use these systems. Internet onboard can be accomplished with wireless routers, express cards, EVDO cards (laptop cards), and satellite communications. These systems allow you complete control of system devices, lighting and appliance controls and motion sensing video cameras both inside and outside of your vessel. Imagine the satisfaction of being able to not only know that someone is on your boat but being able to see them as well, through streaming video to your PC or Java enabled cell phone. These units store video of violations, on an off vessel server. Even if the unit itself was stolen, you would still have video of who did it. These units require a monthly server subscription for access to the web page that controls your vessels systems.

I have developed a comprehensive website where you can learn all about the finest available systems that have been designed just for the marine environment. You will also find pricing and availability of your perfect system, while enjoying the detailed specifications of the various systems.

Use the link below for a visit and get all your questions answered there!

Matthew is a 23 year veteran of the alarm industry. The ability to travel by water is based on the rule of displacement.

In simple terms, displacement occurs when an object is set in fluid, forcing the fluid out of its way. In the case of boats, the object's mass is considered its displacement. The basic concept is the same, however, because it refers to the amount of water forced out of the way. Any object that floats is displacing a measurement of fluid equaling that of its mass. Interestingly, the type of water remains a factor, since a ship traveling in fresh water needs to displace a larger volume of fluid than one of the same size moving through salt water.

Small boats usually have a flat bottom, making it easier to glide on top of water when traveling at fast speeds. Rough waters should be avoided in these types of vessels, as they are intended for much calmer settings, such as ponds and still lakes. Flat-bottomed boats, or "jon (or john) boats", as they are typically called, are primarily constructed of aluminum or wood.

Vessels with round bottoms are designed to slide through water and are designed for low speeds. Found on many canoes and sailboats, round bottoms often require some type of stabilization, since wave movement will cause the vessel to rock. Round-bottomed boats are often the cause of seasickness in many passengers.

The most common type of hull is the "V", or Deep-V. This type of bottom allows a vessel to travel at higher speeds and cut through the waves, producing a gentler ride. Although V bottoms move easier through active waters, a large engine is required to propel the vehicle. The V bottom comes in a variety of designs, with various modifications made over time to improve its purpose.

Boats with dual hulls, or cathedral hulls, are very stable because of the way they sit in the water. They may even possess more than two hulls, called a multi-hull, giving even greater stability. Catamarans are designed using a tunnel hull, which feature two Deep Vs on either side, joined together by a raised section.

When choosing a boat, it is important to consider the type of water in which the watercraft will be used. Although they are less expensive than most and require little maintenance, flat-bottomed watercrafts are never recommended for ocean use. Likewise, for relaxing fishing trips in tranquil waters, a Deep-V vessel would be an excessive purchase.

Victor Epand is an expert consultant about model boats, boat parts, and model submarines. Each has unique characteristics, and it is those characteristics which define each level and that will determine which Turkish Gulet you might charter for a crewed Gulet charter in Turkey.

Traditional and Luxury Gulets share many features, including a blending of practicality and tradition in a relaxed style. Historically, Gulets evolved from fishing and cargo vessels into their present profile of a sturdy yacht with a broad beam and wide deck. Constructed in the shipyards of Bodrum, Marmaris, and Istanbul, and along the Black Sea Coast, these vessels are equipped with motors as well as fully functional rigging. However, do not expect to always sail as the beamy nature of the Gulet usually requires engine assistance to move from anchorage to anchorage. The number of passengers a Gulet can be chartered for depends on the boat's size, although most accommodate between eight and twelve people. These vessels have double occupancy staterooms for passengers generally each with ensuite bath and shower and are comfortably equipped. One of the resounding features of the Turkish Gulet is the expansive aft deck. Covered with a sun awning, the aft deck has a wide cushioned area for lounging and a table with chairs for al fresco dining. Gulets offer plenty of room for sunbathing and are equipped with sun mattresses, snorkeling gear, a shoreside tender and usually water skis, a sea kayak or a windsurfer which will be outlined in the Gulet equipment list.

There are some differences between traditional and luxury Gulets. The Traditional Gulet is the best price value and cost includes the yacht, crew and fuel. Additional costs are beverages and food. Meal plans are offered of fresh local Turkish cuisine on a Full Board (breakfast, lunch and dinner) or Half Board (breakfast and lunch) basis. Generally it is possible to include both Full Board and Half Board days in your charter in order to enjoy some dinners on board under the starlight and others ashore in one of the many local Tavernas.

In addition there is usually an 18% Turkish VAT. Crew will be Turkish citizens and at least one should speak English. Finally, you may or may not be able to use the air conditioner at night as the soundproofing of generators and engines were not a building specification of these traditional vessels. The Traditional Gulet is offered at two price levels, which is moderate level and economy level. The quality of the Gulets is reflective of the level of pricing.

Luxury Gulets have been built within the past three to four years. They are constructed of mahogany rather than the pine of Traditional Gulets, creating an interior with refined workmanship. These vessels also offer imported linens, towels and bath products. In addition, the Luxury Gulet engines and generators are fully soundproofed allowing the use of air conditioning at all times. The price of these yachts is reflective of their upgraded features. Menus include fresh Turkish cuisine and international cuisine.

Gulet-Style Sailing Yachts are built with an adjusted design to be able to sail with aluminum rigging and quality sails, so you can enjoy cruising without an engine. However, as with any sailing vessel, the ability to sail is enhanced by a smaller beam measurement, so Gulet-Style Sailing Yachts are not as roomy as the Traditional or Luxury Gulets. You can't explain how it happened... it just did. You could be using it one day and it suddenly breaks down. You may be getting ready to use it and it just doesn't crank. Anything can happen to the boat. This is true for your boat's propeller as well. However, replacing the propeller doesn't have to be a difficult task as long as you know what you are doing or learn how to do it properly.

Be sure you find the propeller you get will fit your boat. Certain propellers will fit certain boats. You don't want to spend money only to find out that it is the wrong propeller. Use your boat's handbook to help you identify which propeller is right for you. You may find out that you are not limited to a certain propeller type.

Check the propeller's pitch and diameter so that they match the boat's engine. When you have the right propeller, your boat will have the power it needs to get going.

Now that you have the propeller you need, here are some steps to help you remove your old one and replace it with a new one. Don't forget to have tools on hand to help you out.

Five Steps To Replace Your Boat Propeller

Don't remove the prop shaft nut completely just loosen it. You don't want the propeller to go back into the rudder when you get it separated from the shaft. Once you have it loose, then take the nut and washer off.

If it seems you are having some trouble, put some oil onto it and wait to the next day to try messing with it again. If that doesn't seem to do the trick, use some sort of heating device to help loosen it. Try not to scorch anything else while you are doing this trick.

You don't want to use hammers on a boat to make something fit or come off. Hammer vibrations can be sent into the boat's transmissions.

Now that you have the propeller off, be sure to inspect the area for fishing line or anything else that could have gotten caught in it. Inspect all the parts of the boat propeller as well including the nuts and washers.

It's time to replace it with a new one. Be sure you slide it up onto the shaft. When it's on there correctly, you should get a solid smacking sound. Don't use the nut to get it back into place. Use a wrench to tighten it. Above all else, that nut needs to be tight to avoid losing your propeller when it is in use.

Be sure you check your propeller each year for signs of wear and tear. Nothing is worse than being stuck in the middle of the ocean with no propeller.

Some boats may have slightly different parts that hold up a propeller. Should you have any further problems, ask a professional or take a look at your boat's instructional manual for guidance.

Victor Epand is an expert consultant about model boats, boat parts, and model submarines. It does give you piece of mind knowing you are in control of things below the waterline. I have read many articles/books about being offshore or just running coastal in a boat only to read further on that the captain stepped below into the cabin to find water above the floorboards - a dire situation. I never want to get into that situation while being offshore or running in the bays.

A number of years ago I tried to remedy that kind of situation. In those books and articles I read, the amount of water was 1 inch to 1 foot above the floorboards. This was due to the bilge pump being jammed, burned out, or a fuse blown. The height of the water in the cabin depended upon the amount of time gone by before someone went below or woke up in the cabin. At times it is easy to find a leak. Hitting an object under water brings you to the conclusion to look at your prop shafts and shaft logs where your propeller shafts exit the hull of the boat. Also take a look at your rudder post. If the hit was that server, you might also want to check forward for a crack or hole in the hull. But in this case, you were alerted to danger from the sound of the bump/hit made. Something may have happened and you're on the hunt for the water possibly coming into the boat.

But let's take a more subtle route. You're sailing or motoring offshore with the great sunrise or sunset, seas with just a ripple. Oh, so nice. A through-hull fitting starts leaking, a hose clamp loosens off the engine, your stuffing box starts leaking, or your bow thruster assembly starts leaking. All these things may seem minor at first, but can turn into disastrous situations. The through-hull fitting really starts leaking now, or the hose pops off the engine. The stuffing box adjusting nut backs off and water starts gushing in. These are things you need to get control of before a disaster happens.

I have found a simple way (for me) that works and alerts me. Yes, you do have those high water bilge alarms, but I feel if too much water is in the bilge you cannot find the source of the leak because the water level is covering it. It is extremely hard to find a water leak underwater. This is my installation that brings me my piece of mind. While most of my trips involve ocean passages, some are coastal. Even in a good size bay, abandoning ship because of a leak not found in time due to the water level being allowed to rise, is not only foolish, but dangerous. I usually install a 2,000 gph (gallon per hour) bilge pump with an automatic switch and also a 3,000 gph with the same. I install the 2,000 gph with automatic switch on the bilge floor with an inline alarm. I use the oil pressure buzzer, the one you usually hear when you turn on your ignition when you start your boat. This way anytime the bilge pump goes off, the buzzer sounds, letting me know the pump is in use. Because this is a sailboat, you can hear the buzzer anytime. Even with the auxiliary engine on, you can hear it faintly when you get attuned to it. On a powerboat, you can have a counter that you reset to 0. You can look at it from time to time to see a change or even equip it with a light and buzzer setup.

This way if you don't hear the buzzer you see the light flash on and off. With this type of setup, if the buzzer keeps going off multiple times, or stays on for long periods, I immediately investigate. It could be something silly like a bilge compartment that just unclogged (weep hole unclogging) letting extra water in from another compartment, or a sticky auto switch for the bilge pump. By having the buzzer it will alert you that the pump is continuously on, draining your batteries. If you didn't use this setup you wouldn't see anything because there's no water discharge on the outside of the boat (water was pumped out already), or hear it on the inside. It will burn out your batteries and burn out the pump. When offshore or coastal, I try not to leave anything to chance. So the buzzer is a good thing, keeping you in touch with what is going on below the floorboards.

I also mentioned a 3,000 gph bilge pump as an additional setup, and here is why: If there is a big leak and you can't find the source or can't get at it, the 3,000 gph bilge pump will kick in at higher levels. I set up the 3,000 gph higher in the bilge compartment so when the 2,000 gph bilge pump is overwhelmed, jams or just stops working, the 3,000 with take over. You can put a buzzer on this one as well, but I haven't. It's up to you (if I don't hear the buzzer for a time I start checking anyway). With a total of 5,000 gph discharge working, (you can run your engine to keep your batteries charged up) it will give you the additional time, to find, come up with, or figure out an alternative to stopping the leak. You always want time on your side, and this gives it to you.

Douglas Malat is a licensed captain, freelance writer, and co-creator of http://www.YachtAuthority.com, a website where you will find all types of boat accessories.

Boat Covers - Essential Boat Accessories

Generally, people who love to be outdoors, take pride in their boats. You pack your tackle box, grab your pole and buy some worms. You make your way to the fishing dock dreaming you had the perfect fishing boat so you were landlocked no more. Now that dream can become reality with these 4 easy tips for finding and purchasing the perfect fishing boat!

Have a clear understanding of the purpose of the fishing boat. Obviously the boat is going to be used for fishing, but is it going to be used on oceans or in lakes? For day time trips or overnight stays? If you play to stay in your boat overnight, be sure to choose a boat with a hull which will allow you to ride the waves much better than a boat without one.

Make sure to have a clear understanding of your budget. Boats are very expensive items. You should be well acquainted with your finances before you take on the extra burden of a boat purchase. Boats with hulls for overnight stays and rough waters are obviously more expensive than small boats for small lakes. Know your limitations.

Read and understand the warranties fully before making a purchase. A warranty can be your best friend. Make sure the dealer you buy the boat from offers you the proper coverage in case there is any defect or problem with your boat. You don't want to end up having to pay huge amounts to fix your boat because you forgot to check out the warranties!

Make sure the boat has proper certification .The NMMA, or the National Marine Manufacturer's Association is an organization that tests boats that are manufactured by different companies. They only certify those boats that pass their rigorous testing. Any boat certified by the NMMA is one that you would feel safe owning.

Also, just like cars, boats must be registered.
